Community Readiness Project

By Arthur Dave Miller

Amy Mawdsley and myself have been working on this project for a short time but we are thrilled with what we have in store for Community Readiness (CR) initiatives in 2017-2020.

This project is built around the Community Readiness Model which gives community members the tools to identify how ready their community is to respond to an issue.  The model provides guidance of where to begin in terms of implementing risk reduction strategies and activities to address the risks associated with HIV and AIDS.

In the first of the three years, we are in the process of updating the CAAN Community Readiness tools including the Manual and Workbook, and they will be made available in both English and French. We are also going to invite organizations to participate in the CR training, which will involve:

  • A two-and-a-half-day training in Year 1 where folks will receive the tools and skills to do CR assessments
  • Skills building trainings to be integrated into AGM gatherings in Year 2 and 3, along with ongoing support from CR staff via email and phone

o In Year 2, participants will present their assessments and work plans at the training

o In Year 3, participants will implement their work plans, and present their reassessment of CR at the training

  • Project evaluation with input from the participants and project coordinators
