The last couple of years has been quite challenging for CAAN as we and other groups across Canada went through the Community Action Fund Request for Proposals process.  We entered into a three-year agreement with the Public Health Agency of Canada.  Four key projects were identified:

1. Transitional project – our overall objective for the transitional project is to review where we have been, where we are now, and where we want to be given the realities of decreased funding levels in years two and three.

a. The overall objective of the transitional project is “By 2018, CAAN will have reviewed their organizational structure, which will be endorsed by at least ALSC board members resulting in CAAN having a sustainable plan and updated policies and procedures that members and partner organizations will commit to working towards achieving.”

b. To achieve this objective CAAN will review the current organizational structure, conduct a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats analysis (SWOT), conduct our current Human Resources capacity, conduct two face-to-face meetings one for staff and one for Board and Staff.  As well as doing a thorough review of our current Communications, including updating our website, reviewing our social media activities and updating policies and procedures to meet the needs of the people we serve.

2. Prevention Education – the objective for this project is “By 2020, CAAN will have increased the ability in 20 community based organizations (in at least 4 PHAC regions) to implement culturally-based prevention interventions addressing barriers for meeting the 90-90-90 objectives for Indigenous people living with HIV, HCV and other STBBIs by 80%, and 50% of these organizations will have implemented at least 1 intervention in their community.”

3. Community Readiness – the objective for the Community Readiness project is “By 2020, CAAN will have raised the readiness level by 1 level per year, using the Community Readiness Tool in at least 60% of 20 communities within 4 PHAC regions in achieving the integration of STBBIs towards the 90-90-90 goal.”

4. Stigma and Discrimination project – the objective of this project is “By 2020, through a Social Media Campaign, CAAN will have increased the cultural competency in the delivery of health care and social services level for Indigenous people living with and/or affected by HIV, HCV and STBBIs in health care and social service professionals across Canada by at least 50%, leading to a stronger commitment in delivering culturally competent care by 25%.”
