Community Action Fund (CAF)
This past year has been very challenging with many groups across Canada with the Community Action Fund (CAF). This fund is for organizations who are working with membership who live off-reserve. You may have heard that there are many organizations across the country that will be closing their doors in at the end of this fiscal year (March 2018). These decisions will have serious implications for Indigenous Women across Canada, for some of the organizations are the only support they have in their community. Even though there are several organizations closing their doors there will be some new organizations that will be opening. If you are accessing services it is important to find out if you will be affected by these decisions. CAAN is continuing to advocate to Public Health Agency of Canada for the continuation of funding and for Indigenous Women across the country.
Strong Bear Women’s Journey
Over the past year, I have been involved with this committee which is currently wrapping up Sharing Circles with Indigenous Women in Thunder Bay, Prince Albert and Toronto. The Circles provide a safe environment for networking, learning and sharing with other women who are living with HIV. This research grant has been so successful that CAAN and the Women’s College Hospital are working together to apply for another grant. Fingers crossed that there will be continued Women’s Sharing Circles in other areas of Canada.
CAAN AGM & Wise Practices
Theme: “Honouring 20 years: Transforming Wholistic Approaches to Indigenous Health”
It is that time of the year again, where we are hosting our AGM. If you are interested in applying for a scholarship, submitting an abstract for either the Research stream, or Skills Building stream or if you want to attend to learn more about CAAN. Please go to: www.caan.ca and click on the Events/Workshops (drop down menu) for the applications and Abstract forms.
In the meantime, start thinking of any resolutions that you or your agency want to bring forth that focus on Indigenous Women. Give me a call if you need help I will do my best to assist.
In the spirit of this year’s theme I would like to share some of the work that will be taking place. I am busy drafting up EONS II – Aboriginal Women’s Strategy. With our new expanded mandate it is important for us to broaden our strategy.
Another venture that I am excited about is to host webinars where women can learn and be empowered by other women. I have some presenters in mind, but if there is someone specific please give me a call at the CAAN office in Halifax – 902 433 0900.
If you have any ideas of speakers, or if you would like to apply for VOW – please give me a call.
