About Us:
CAAN, Communities, Alliances, & Networks, the Canadian Indigenous AIDS Network, is a national non-profit organization. CAAN, Communities, Alliances, & Networks focuses on integrating traditional Indigenous practices with modern health approaches to empower and support Indigenous people affected by AIDS, HIV and other sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs).

Position Overview:
We are seeking passionate and committed individuals to join our Board of Directors. As a member of our Board, you will play a vital role in guiding the strategic direction of CAAN, Communities, Alliances, & Networks, ensuring good governance, and upholding our mission and values. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to meaningful health initiatives and make a lasting impact on the health of Indigenous Peoples living on the lands called Canada.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to the health and wellness of First Nation, Metis and Inuit Peoples living on the land called Canada
  • Understand and consistently demonstrate a commitment to the organization’s Mission and programs
  • Keep up to date with issues and trends that affect the organization
  • Prepare for and attend Board meetings
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to the organization
  • Ensure the organization’s activities align with its mission, vision, and values.
  • Oversee financial performance and ensure sound financial management.
  • Support fundraising and resource development efforts.
  • Advocate for the organization and its mission within the community and to stakeholders.
  • Attend regular board meetings and participate in committee work.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of organizational policies.
  • Engage with your First Nation, settlement, and/or community to gather information about the support
  • Comply with the legal Duties of a Board Member in terms of Care, Loyalty and Obedience
  • Ensure any conflicts of interest are shared

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • An official member of a First Nation, Metis Community or Settlement, or Inuit Community, recognized by the Nation or Community.
  • Living with, familiar with, and/or impacted by those living with AIDS, HIV and other blood-borne infections (ST/BBIs).
  • Experience in governance, non-profit management, or related fields is an asset.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with diverse groups.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A connection to your community.
  • Knowledge of healthcare systems and policies in Canada is an asset.
  • Previous board experience is an asset but not required.

Time Commitment:

  • The Board of Directors meets monthly, with additional committee meetings as required.
  • Directors are expected to participate actively in all board activities and attend meetings regularly.
