National Gathering of Graduate Students (NGGS)

2015 National Gathering of Graduate Students in Aboriginal Health Research

The National Gathering of Graduate Students (NGGS) will be meeting July 12 – 14 2015 prior to the CAAN AGM and WPV event in Vancouver. This year’s theme is “The Journey of Indigenous Health Research: Past, Present and Future”.

The NGGS is an annual meeting for young researchers in Indigenous health and wellness. The Gathering provides a mentorship and capacity building forum for students, with opportunities to present and discuss their research, facilitate student networking opportunities with community and academic researchers, and attend skill-building workshops.

Graduate students may present findings, issues and challenges arising in any stage of their research in Indigenous health and wellness including: literature review, proposal development, research agreement development, building community relationships, knowledge translation, analysis, results, and dissemination.

Applicants’ research must be related to health and wellness of Indigenous Peoples. Applications are evaluated by reviewers who are experts in the same field (i.e., peers of the applicants), and their recommendations are used by the NGGS Organizing Committee to make funding decisions. Peer review is the internationally accepted benchmark for ensuring quality and excellence in scientific research.

Deadline for Abstract Submission is May 13, 2015. Successful applicants will be notified May 29, 2015.

Limited travel funds are available. All applicants are encouraged to apply to NGGS-privileged travel awards through CIHR’s spring 2015 Competition. Request for proposals will be announced mid-April 2015 and found here:

The 2015 NGGS is sponsored by the CIHR Institute for Aboriginal People’s Health and CAHR UVic, and hosted by the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN) and the Aboriginal HIV & AIDS Community-Based Research Collaborative Centre (AHA Centre).
