ICAD, Results Canada, and CAAN co-host Unfinished Business: TB, HIV, and COVID-19 in our communities

Globally, tuberculosis (TB) is one of the leading causes of death among people living with HIV. On July 19, 2021, CAAN co-hosted a webinar with the Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development (ICAD) and Results Canada to raise awareness about the intersections between TB, HIV, and COVID-19, as well as identify actions to address these intersections. Moderated by Sugandhi del Canto (Policy Advisor, CAAN), the panelists were Robin Montgomery (Executive Director, ICAD), Igah Sanguya (Community Health Representative, Nunavut), and Trevor Stratton (IIWGHA Coordinator, CAAN). Leigh Raithby (Policy and Advocacy Officer, Results Canada) facilitated the event as well as the follow-up evaluation.

Topics and themes of the webinar included:

  • HIV and TB stigma
  • Disruptions to health services caused by COVID-19 and their lasting impacts
  • Importance of integrated global HIV and TB targets and indicators
  • Context-specific and ethical engagement with key populations affected by TB
  • Using the lessons learned from COVID-19 to strengthen an integrated HIV and TB response

At AIDS 2022, the world’s largest conference on HIV and AIDS, TB will feature prominently alongside HIV and COVID-19. The 9th International Indigenous Pre-conference on HIV & AIDS, scheduled in Montreal for July 27 and 29, 2022 will bring Indigenous experts from around the world to network, transfer knowledge and share wise practices.

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ GLOBAL CALL TO ACTION FOR TB

This 10-point call to action is meant to parallel the issues that are outlined in the civil society “Shadow Report” titled, A Deadly Divide: TB Commitments vs. TB Realities released during the first week of December. The Shadow report responds to the report released by the WHO on Progress towards the achievement of global tuberculosis targets and implementation of the political declaration resulting from the high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly on the fight against TB.
