A panel of Indigenous people living with HIV spoke at the Health Canada National Conference in 1991 and laid the seeds for the creation of the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN). CAAN has 23 years of history as an incorporated non-profit organization whose mandate has evolved from a primary HIV and AIDS focus to include STBBI’s, Hepatitis C, Tuberculosis, Harm Reduction, Mental Health, and Aging. CAAN provides a national forum for Indigenous dialogue on these issues, and responds to identified needs on prevention, education, promotion of wise practices, training and support for the implementation of community developed responses to issues and research.
